Semana Santa

Easter in Spain is celebrated during Semana Santa (Holy Week). In 2013 this is between the 24th and the 31st of March. Málaga, Seville, Madrid, Valladolid, Zamora & León hold elaborate processions for Holy Week.

En Clase 18/03/13 – Familia

Today we continued with the theme of ‘family’. Some children finished off their family trees. Others practiced the words for family members or talked about their own families using the following types of phrase:

El padre de mi padre es mi ___________. (My dad’s dad is my ___________.)

La madre de mi padre es mi ___________(My dad’s mum is my ___________.)

¿Cómo se llama tu madre? – What is your mum called?

¿Cómo se llama tu hermano?  – What is your brother called?

Las Fallas

Las Fallas is a 5-day event leading up to St Joseph’s Day on the 19th of March. It takes place in Valencia. Each neighbourhood traditionally gets together to build giant puppets which are later set on fire. The burning of these puppets is of course accompanied with plenty of street parties throughout the city.

Why not research a festival held in Spain or a Spanish-speaking country and tell us all about it in a reply?

los-simpsons-los-simpsons-29377699-1152-864Today we learned about our families and heard Lisa Simpson talk about her family (Los Simpson) too. The children made some wonderful family trees which will be on display outside the hall at school.

Here’s a challenge! I’ve written some members of the family, but I’ve mixed the letters up. Can anyone unscramble them? Write your answers in a reply.
